Bernie Tiede Released

The Murder That Inspired "Bernie"

Synopsis

Bernie Tiede, a former mortician, gained notoriety for the sensational murder of wealthy widow Marjorie Nugent in 1996. His story captivated the public and became the inspiration for the 2012 film "Bernie," directed by Richard Linklater.

The Crime

On November 19, 1996, Tiede shot and killed Nugent, who was 81 years old. He then hid her body in a freezer and continued to withdraw money from her bank account to maintain her lifestyle. The murder remained undetected for nearly a year.

The Trial and Conviction

In 1999, Tiede was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, the case gained significant media attention due to the unusual circumstances and Tiede's charming demeanor. Supporters argued that he had acted in self-defense or under the influence of Nugent's manipulation.

The Appeal

In 2014, Tiede was granted an appeal based on ineffective legal counsel during his initial trial. A retrial was ordered, but before it could take place, a plea agreement was reached.

Release on Bond

In 2021, Tiede was released from prison on bond while awaiting his new trial. He has been living under strict conditions and receiving therapy. The date for his retrial has not yet been set.
